It is an exciting day when we see a Baptism in our worship service. It speaks to us of a love for God and an obedience and commitment on behalf of the one being baptised. When a person understands the great love of God as He sent Jesus to die for us and rise again from the grave, we can’t help but be obedient and follow as he asks us to. Knowing we are loved makes us do things that are pleasing to the one who loves us. Knowing someone has died for us, so we can have a better life and live forever, makes us also follow in commitment and love.
Love for God, obedience and commitment to follow His ways are part of the Christian faith. They are expressed from an overflow of a heart that’s full of gratitude.
This is not to say that we won’t fail at times, we will, that’s why Jesus came because He knew we couldn’t get it right all the time or save ourselves. But with the Spirit of God within us now as believers, we are led and guided in the right path and when we do, we find rest for or souls. As we love, obey and commit our lives we enter into a rest or contentment in God whereas rejecting God’s ways can bring turmoil and often pain. A person can be saved and miserable. A person can be a Christian and be anxious or unfulfilled if our hearts get hardened and fail to respond to His voice. If as Christians we are like that, amazingly we still have ‘today’ to start afresh and enter into God’s rest. Hebrews 4 says that the promise of ‘rest’ still stands, but we need to make every effort to enter that rest (v11) so that we don’t fall through disobedience.
What a wonderful Lord we have, who gives us the best and wants only the best for us.
May you find rest in Him as you walk in faith and obedience.
